Some gardens may not be able to open at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. There will be a FREE Printed Guide in the form of an A2 fold out map showing the location of the gardens. It will not be posted, rather it will be collectable at gardens.
This is a charitable fundraising activity, refunds should be covered by personal insurance. Please be aware there will be photography at this event. If you do not wish to be photographed in one of the gardens you are visiting please make the photographer aware.

ABOUT THE GARDENS: The Aga Khan Centre in King's Cross has six Islamic Gardens showcasing the diversity of Muslim cultures while celebrating classic Islamic garden design. They form part of a conceptual ribbon pathway of Islamic-inspired gardens in this area. There are two more at Victoria Hall (not included in the tour) and two in the public realm; Lewis Cubitt Square and Jellicoe Gardens. The AKC gardens range from contemplative courtyards inspired by Andalusia and loggias inspired by the Middle East, to rooftop spaces inspired by South and Central Asia. The centre is home to the Aga Khan Foundation UK, Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, and The Institute of Ismaili Studies - all founded by His Highness the Aga Khan.

The Aga Khan Centre Gardens can only be visited as part of a pre-booked 1 hour guided tour, subject to a £5 admin fee. There will be a maximum of 15 places available on each tour. The tours are accessible to all and open to all ages.

We tend to associate the Square Mile with finance rather than nature. But amid its ancient streets and modern office blocks there are secret oases, providing welcome havens for residents, visitors, workers – and wildlife.

Join me on a gentle tour to explore some of the City of London’s hidden green gems and to find out a little about their history.

In this gentle stroll through the back streets of Lambeth we will be discovering a selection of the many public green spaces the borough has to offer. They range from former ecclesiastical gardens and the capital’s first commercial pleasure gardens all the way up to modern day pocket parks. Along the way we will delve into the history of the area and discover the characters that have helped to shape it.

Practical Information: The walk covers a little over a mile and will last 60-75 minutes. It is on level ground throughout, on pavements or tarmac paths, although the pavement is a little narrow in places and there may be stepped kerbs to negotiate.

A fascinating walk around beautiful Belgravia. We visit some stunning squares and cobbled mews and we learn about the people who lived, loved and died here, sometimes in dramatic circumstances! We will hear about the murderous Aristocrat, the dodgy Lord, the architect who transformed this part of London and the mayhem that was the sinking of the world’s most famous ship and how it was dreamt up over coffee and cigars in a house in Belgrave Square. This walk is led by City of Westminster qualified guide Caroline Mongan and ends in time to visit Belgrave Square Gardens.

TOUR GUIDE: MIKE DAWSON

The Thames was the main artery of pre-industrial London, on its North Bank lined by the palaces, houses and gardens of royalty and aristocracy. Starting in Westminster, for 1,000 years the centre of government and a royal palace for 500 years, we will visit remains of Whitehall palace and gardens, at its height the largest royal palace in Europe. We will walk along the wonderful Embankment gardens, created by Joseph Bazelgette, Victorian engineer extraordinary above his London main sewer, with many famous statues and other fascinating historic remains. We will end in London’s lawyers’ quarter with three of the magnificent Temple gardens open just for this Weekend.

TOUR GUIDE: PHILIP BENSTEAD

Visiting Cloth Fair Hidden Garden by London's oldest church, then to 7-acre Charterhouse – Courtyard Gardens. Hoxton Trust variety of flora, fauna/wildlife, including 37 species of trees and 161 species of plants. Fassett Square inspired the BBC's EastEnders, restored by residents. King Henry's Walk Garden contains growing plots for cultivation by residents, its organic gardening methods encourage biodiversity. Barnsbury Wood is a little hidden gem - the smallest local nature reserve in London. The site was originally the garden of a house built in the 1840s. Left to nature, this woodland is home to a range of wildlife.

Southwark today belies its colourful and influential past. Our main aim is to explore the very varied green spaces of today, retrace their sometimes unusual pasts, and weave in Dickens, Chaucer, Shakespeare, Keats along the way.
The hop trade, stemming from the Garden of England (Kent) also helped to shape Southwark, and we’ll trace its eventual decline and the recent rebirth of small scale brewing nearby.

ABOUT THE GARDENS:

The Aga Khan Centre in King's Cross has six Islamic Gardens showcasing the diversity of Muslim cultures while celebrating classic Islamic garden design. They form part of a conceptual ribbon pathway of Islamic-inspired gardens in this area. There are two more at Victoria Hall (not included in the tour) and two in the public realm; Lewis Cubitt Square and Jellicoe Gardens. The AKC gardens range from contemplative courtyards inspired by Andalusia and loggias inspired by the Middle East, to rooftop spaces inspired by South and Central Asia. The centre is home to the Aga Khan Foundation UK, Aga Khan University - Institute for the Study of Muslim Civilisations, and The Institute of Ismaili Studies - all founded by His Highness the Aga Khan.

Feed your curiosity and explore London's private, secret and little-known gardens across the city over one very special weekend. 

Gardens range from the historic and  traditional to the new and experimental, and include private gardens, roof gardens, community allotments, gardens belonging to historic buildings, institutions, cafes, schools and shops. 

A weekend ticket gives access to gardens (excluding balloted-entry gardens and gardens that require pre booking nearer the time) on both Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June 2024. There is an option when booking tickets for you to add personal insurance, covering the cost of your ticket (less booking fee) should the event be cancelled. Garden opening times and days may vary please check our website for details. Whilst we hope to open all of the gardens, some may not be able to open at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances.

There will be a FREE Printed Guide in the form of an A2 fold out map showing the location of the gardens. It will not be posted, rather it will be collectable at gardens.

FREE Child Tickets (11 years and under) and Companion Tickets for those requiring carers are available. These tickets must be booked online, in advance and are only valid for entry with an accompanying adult ticket holder. Child Tickets will appear on the Add-Ons page after selecting an Adult weekend tickets above. You must be 18 or over to accompany a child. For Companion Tickets, please email office@londongardenstrust.org with your booking reference explaining your circumstances and we will arrange ticket dispatch.

Provided there is a surplus, up to 5% of net ticket sales is returned to some of the community and volunteer run gardens that participate in the event.

Please be aware there will be photography at this event. If you do not wish to be photographed in one of the gardens you are visiting please make the photographer aware.
