The gardens have been developed from the 16th Century and are
now Grade II Listed by Historic England who say “Pleasure grounds and a park,
since 1952 a public park, largely developed to their present layout from the
late C19. The pleasure grounds continue to reflect the influences of the Arts
and Craft Movement and the last private owners' interest in Italian Gardens.
Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe designed the Theatre Garden”. They are adjacent to
Orpington Priory which is an old ecclesiastical building with parts dating back
to the 12th Century.
